Surgery of the guttural pockets

Guttural pouches are cavities in the horse’s throat where important blood vessels and nerves pass. Fungal infection of the guttural pouches causes severe nosebleeds and can be fatal when the fungus reaches the carotid artery. If drug treatment is ineffective, surgery is required.
